Benefit Auction Raises Money for Katrina Victims

September 30, 2005

September 30th, 2005 was no ordinary Friday night at Cloister. Yes, the club was packed full with upperclassmen and underclassmen alike, and music ranging from the Beach Boys to Britney Spears was playing full-blast on the jukebox, but the aim of the night wasn’t partying – it was hurricane relief. Cloister Inn was hosting an all-male charity date auction, and by the end of the night approximately $1,500 had been raised for donation to the American Red Cross. It is believed that Cloister’s event was the largest University-wide event on the Street to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina.

I had the honor of planning this event with four other fantastic female officers – social chair Liv Droney ’06, community service chairs Rachel McQuaid ’06 and Yuna Larrabee ’06, and faculty fellows chair Jennie Eskin ’06 (who served as the official event photographer). Two area ice cream stores, Thomas Sweet’s and The Bent Spoon, generously donated gift certificates to accompany each auction item, and an elaborate advertising campaign featuring model-style photographs of various Cloister men made quite a statement around campus. Community service chairs of other clubs on the Street were so impressed by the auction concept that they advertised Cloister’s event to their own clubs.

The most exciting part, however, was the sheer enthusiasm to participate in such a positive event. House manager Steve Coppola ’06 set up speakers and a microphone to turn the living room into a stage complete with a runway, and Patrick Cotter ’06 put in an amazing performance as the auctioneer. The auction participants themselves were fabulous as well – treasurer Peter Wong ’06 encouraged bids by tossing candy to audience members while 50 Cent’s recent hit “Candy Shop” played in the background, Sandor Kovacs ’07 showed off his dance moves (which have become legendary around Cloister), and costumes ran the gamut from firefighters to devils to a Cupid.

Overall, this was one of the most successful community service events that Cloister had ever hosted. Even though we certainly hope there will never be a natural disaster like Hurricane Katrina again, we do hope that we can turn the Cloister charity date auction into an annual event.
