Open Mic Night Brings Out Cloister TalentFebruary 12, 2006 Caroline C. Closmore ‘07 Vice President
A mid-week evening walk out to the far end of the street was a daunting thought for many Cloister members this winter. While other students shut themselves up in their rooms for evening studies, Cloister welcomed those brave enough to leave the warmth of campus for musical study breaks once a month. The cold walk out was rewarded with a crackling fire, cookies and coffee, and the talents of those aspiring rock stars among us at Cloister Inn. Pulling out speakers and microphones and rearranging the leather couches made for an intimate escape that allowed our favorite musically inclined members to show off their skills. Dave Ashley ’07 and Sami Marden-Bay ’06 are regular performers at Open Mic Night and it was their guitar duets and crowd-pleasing favorites that got our feet tapping. This relaxed musical gathering has added a new dimension to our club and has most recently drawn some quest appearances that have kept the club rocking into the night.
This event has grown over the past semester, bringing together members in a very chill atmosphere and showing prospective sophomores what its like to hang out at Cloister without a huge party going on. Our most recent Open Mic Night broke free of the usual good old favorite tunes to a full out improvised session including several guitars, the piano and a harmonica. Completely unexpected and full of energy we got to see the creativity of our friends let loose. After the final jam huge cheers and smiles, high fives and clapping filled the room and everyone left looking forward to more musical study breaks at Cloister. Open Mic Night has been a huge success. It is a tradition we plan to continue because live music, good friends, and tasty treats, is a combination that aligns perfectly with the spirit of our great club, Cloister Inn.
