Cloister and Town Partner to Fight Substance Abuse

September 23, 2009

The following is quoted from an article in the September 21 Princeton Packet:

Representatives from Princeton University's eating clubs continue to partner with members of the area’s counseling and substance abuse community to promote positive social behavior among local young people.

The latest incarnation of the partnership is between the Cloister Inn eating club's membership and its president, Aran Clair, and Corner House, Princeton’s longtime counseling center. Cloister members took part in one of Corner House’s premier events — a leadership institute at the Princeton-Blairstown Center from Aug. 4 to Aug. 6.

More events are on the horizon for the two groups, like an Oct. 2 fun night, to be held at the Cloister Inn. Kids from Corner House will have an opportunity to spend an evening with Princeton University students playing games and taking part in other activities. Later in the year Cloister will bring the Corner House kids back for a cappella nights and dodgeball events. 'It will show that students at Princeton can have a great time without drugs and alcohol,' Mr. Clair said.

The success of the collaborations is already evident, according to Mr. Clair, who said he and his fellow Cloister members have bonded with the local Corner House kids over similar interests like social networking sites such as Facebook and popular video games like 'Rock Band.'

'Cloister members have really hit it off with (Corner House’s kids),' said Gary De Blasio, Corner House’s executive director. 'The focus is that the clubs are having a positive impact on the community — they’re good role models. Aran and Cloister (are) helping us take it to another level.'
